I never thought I would end up living a few blocks from RC, but here I am. How did I end up here? After working nearly ten years in Washington, D.C. as an attorney and consultant, my beautiful wife and I decided it was time to start a family. However, our lifestyle was not suitable for family life. I traveled frequently (spending nine or more months a year "on the road") and my wife spent a lot time riding horses - in part to while away the hours I was gone. At the time 9/11, the anthrax scare and the sniper did not make Washington, D.C. a "kid friendly" kind of place. So we decided to move to my wife's hometown - yes, Salem, Virginia - and take it from there - that was the extent of our plan (OK, we spent several months traveling before we moved as I had frequent flyer miles to burn).
How is life here? Great! We found a gem of a house in a charming neighbourhood, white picket fence and all. Our little girl, Isabella, adores her grandparents, who play with her every day. And we started a business - an import and e-commerce company that is still very much a start-up but is growing quickly. We import mostly specialty paper products from Europe and sell them on our own online stores: Italian Papers & Gifts - http://www.italianpapers.com/, Trident Cards - http://www.tridentcards.com, Advent Gifts - http://www.adventgifts.com, House of Tarot - http://www.houseoftarot.com/ and Casa Antigua - http://www.lacasaantigua.com/ (the last one has been mentioned in several national magazines). You could say we are living the American Dream - the background is certainly Rockwellian.
So you see, you never know when you will come full circle, in one way or another. Best wishes for 2006.

Bump! We just had a good time sourcing props for major new movie - they wanted high-end European poker chips and found us via http://www.tridentcards.com. We are going into the apparel business as we just got the licenses to produce branded baseball caps with the logos of famous playing card manufacturers. Advent calendar season is keeping us busy at http://www.adventgifts.com. Had two nice vacations in the West Coast this year. Happy Halloween.

| I'm getting ready for the full circle as well. I'm a 97 grad(26 when I graduated) and spent the last 8 years in Virginia Beach. I've accepted an IT position at Advance Auto and will be moving the family to Salem in December. I too think it will be a great place to raise a family.

I'm sure this is too late (did not get a notice about your post), but this is a good time to move into Salem. Houses in our neighbourhood (Langhorne Place) never sell through brokers - they always sell through word of mouth. However, this year there are two on the market (both are beautiful) - so the market is soft.
We may run into you as one of our consulting clients does a bit of work for Advance.
The challenge we are finding now is to find new experiences for our munchkin - too easy to get into a routine and, while we would not trade away what we have here, we want to make sure her horizons are broad. There is a terrific childrens' museum in Lynchburg - it would not be out of place in a major city. Beyond that, we're planning at least quarterly trips to DC plus a longer vacation. Hope everything went well with your move.
